Busy Holiday Weekend for Red Cross

Springfield, MO.  -  While families were enjoying all the festivities of the 4th of July weekend,  many Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers of the Greater Ozarks Chapter of the American Red Cross were on call and responded to an unusually high number of fires in a 3-day period.  The fires occurred in the counties of McDonald, Ozark, Jasper, Laclede, Howell, Greene and Taney counties.  The call to respond to this high number of fires is normally what the chapter will experience during the winter months.  But at times, fires have no boundaries.  For the volunteers that respond, it doesn't matter if they receive a call at 2 a.m. or 11 p.m.
Recently the Red Cross received a "thank you" from a fire victim that had to be carried out of the house and was taken to the hospital.  She is doing fine now.  But she wanted the volunteers to know how much she appreciated their efforts and help.  She sent the following message to one of the chapter offices:

"You all were a comfort in a time of shock.  Having people that care meant so much.  We did have insurance, but are still waiting on the money.  People can't imagine the turmoil until it happens to you.  Your assistance was so appreciated.  I would like to help others.  Please let me know what I can do.  How to donate?  Thank you so much.  I will keep you all in my prayers.  I thank God for my life.  I know others have had much worse tragedy.  I can't imagine the families who have lost loved ones in a fire.  You all are God sent!  Thank you again for the work you do."

The Red Cross is 97% volunteers and without their help and support it would be impossible to achieve our goals and carry out our mission.  The entire staff at the Greater Ozarks Chapter would like to extend their thanks to all those volunteers who unselfishly give their time to make a difference in the lives of others!  They are the unsung heroes!

DAT members are volunteers with the Greater Ozarks Chapter and have received specialized training in various aspects of disaster response, including casework interviews, damage assessment, sheltering and feeding, health services and crisis counseling.  DAT members also have the full support of the chapter for additional personnel and resources if needed.

For information about training to become a Red Cross volunteer, please call 866-206-0256 EXT. 200 or visit www.redcross-ozarks.org/volunteer.

American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people.  To help the victims of local disasters, financial contributions can be mailed to:  American Red Cross, 1545 N. West Bypass Springfield, MO  65803

Sad News About Ruth

Hi Everybody,

If you have not already heard the sad news, Ruth ... died a little after 10am this morning. I was with Ruth yesterday afternoon and had some very specials moments with her. Ruth was alert and talking, but still in great physical distress. All of Ruth's surviving family were with her this morning when she passed away. I have been asked by the family to be a pallbearer and I have told them I would be honored.

At this time I am still awaiting news of when the funeral will be and an address for condolence cards. When this information becomes available I will let Luke and Perry know so they can pass the information along.

... Ruth has taught me again the deep connection we all have to each other within our Red Cross family.

... Thank you everybody for your thoughts and prayers for Ruth and her family.

Update on Ruth - SAF Volunteer in Hospital

Hey Perry,

Ruth is at the University Hospital – Columbia.
Address Cards:

Ruth, Red Cross SAF Volunteer, ICU
1 Hospital Drive, Columbia, MO 65201.

Ruth is in ICU so cards are all she can have – I learned that the hard way with flowers the first time.

The nurses a week ago questioned my Red Cross ID and shirt and I was telling them that Ruth is a SAF [Service to Armed Forces] volunteer.

One of the nurses told us that he was a disaster volunteer for Red Cross for 3 years and also taught CPR for Heath & Safety. It was great to hear that somebody caring for Ruth was aware of what her service to the Red Cross means.

Ruth is extremely dedicated to Military Services and has helped many service personnel and their families over the [many] years she has volunteered.

I’m all about the shout out on her behalf.
