Corporate America Responds to Needs in Haiti

PRESS RELEASE

Corporate America Responds to Needs in Haiti

Generous donations to the American Red Cross are critical to relief efforts in Haiti.

WASHINGTON, January 21, 2010 – Companies large and small, representing industries across the United States, have taken action to support their neighbors in Haiti by donating millions of dollars to the American Red Cross and by encouraging their customers and employees to follow suit. This support is making it into the hands of survivors and enabling more help to be on the way.

The distinguished corporate members of the Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP) allow the American Red Cross to respond immediately to the needs of individuals and families impacted by disaster anywhere in the United States, regardless of cost. In the wake of the Haiti earthquake, ADGP members increased their humanitarian commitment by making additional financial donations to the Red Cross International Response Fund and Haiti earthquake.

Donations of more than $1 million were also made by numerous organizations and foundations in support of Haiti emergency relief and recovery efforts. Additionally, more than 100 companies have launched employee giving campaigns in coordination with the Red Cross.

Thanks to the help of these companies, and the American public, relief materials are being delivered to Haiti. Red Cross workers from around the world, as well as volunteers based in Haiti, are addressing urgent needs and mobilizing a massive response operation in the region. The Red Cross is providing a wide range of help and support in the form of food, water, relief supplies, field hospitals, emotional support, sanitation facilities and family linking services for the people of Haiti. In the days ahead, the American Red Cross will begin to provide supplies for temporary shelters in Haiti. Kits, containing tarps, rope and tools, as well as tents and blankets, will be made available for an initial 20,000 families.

"The generous contributions and support of our corporate partners are critical to the ability of the American Red Cross to provide help and hope for the people of Haiti during their time of need," said Jeffrey Towers, Chief Development Officer of the American Red Cross. "We are rushing supplies and disaster management staff to Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake, and are very grateful the support of these companies for our humanitarian mission."

The American Red Cross would like to recognize the support of Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP) members. Beyond their annual commitment, many of them have made additional financial gifts to support Haiti relief. The Red Cross also recognizes companies that have made donations of $1 million to the Haiti relief efforts. (In alphabetical order):

Haiti Progress Report

NEWS RELEASE 1/17/2010
HAITI EARTHQUAKE

Red Cross is Making Progress

Springfield, MO

The American public has reached out to help and their support is getting to Haitian earthquake survivors.

The American Red Cross is performing first aid, delivering water, addressing urgent needs and mobilizing a massive response operation in Haiti. First aid posts have been set up in the streets, where Red Cross workers and volunteers from Haiti and other countries are working side by side to clean stitch up wounds amidst the rubble.  More than 100 Red Cross staff from two dozen nations are supporting several thousand local volunteers, and more Red Cross teams from around the world are on the way.

Today, Sunday, the Red Cross has been setting up a field hospital in Jacmel which will be able to treat 200 people per day. We have also supplied medical kits to treat 2,000 patients and hundreds of blankets and plastic sheets have been distributed.

A Red Cross water trucking program is now providing clean water for about 1,000 people living in a makeshift camp in the Delmas neighborhood.  Latrines have also been built in the same area to help address sanitation issues.

Twenty thousand relief items should arrive Monday on a cargo plane provided in partnership with FED EX.

In the days ahead, the Red Cross will begin to provider temporary shelters in Haiti.  Kits containing tarps, rope and tools, as well as tents and blankets will be made available for an initial 20,000 families.

The Red Cross is training 40-100 Creole speaking volunteers who will work as translators on the USS Comfort when Haitians will be brought aboard for medical care.

As of January 16 the American Red Cross has raised $87 million for relief efforts.  Terrible times like these bring out the best in people, and we are grateful for the support being given.

People can donate in support of the relief effort in Haiti at www.redcross.org or by calling 1800-RED-CROSS.  Donations may also be brought to the Greater Ozarks Chapter offices in Springfield, Joplin, West Plains, Nevada and Lebanon.

Mobile phone users can text "Haiti" to 90999 to make a $10 contribution (charged to their phone bill).

CPR or Not CPR - Think about THAT.

I was doing some research on CPR stats for a grant so I could present
all the advantages of knowing CPR.

I came across a blog someone had written and they asked the question
this way - what are the advantages of not knowing CPR?

Think about that.
